California Window Tint Laws: What's Legal in 2026

One of the most common questions we get before a tint job is simple: “How dark can I legally go?” Here’s the short version.

Front side windows

California requires at least 70% light transmission on the front two side windows (driver and front passenger). This is the strictest rule in the state and applies to every passenger vehicle.

Back side windows and rear window

Behind the driver, the rules loosen up. Any darkness is legal on the back side windows and the rear window — which is why a lot of sedans and trucks go noticeably darker toward the back.

Reflectivity and color

Tint can’t be red, amber, or blue, and there are limits on how reflective (mirrored) the film can be.

Medical exemptions

Some drivers qualify for a darker front-window exemption for medical reasons. If that applies to you, bring your documentation when you come in and we’ll walk you through it.
